But when it comes to complex components, things get a whole lot trickier. Complex parts might have multiple diameters, intricate grooves, threads, and custom shapes. Our team has to program the CNC machine to handle these different features precisely. Programming alone can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days for extremely complex parts. And that’s just the programming part. Once the machine is set up, each part might take 8 – 12 hours or even more to produce.

Another big factor is the material. We work with a variety of materials, including aluminum, steel, brass, and plastic. Softer materials like aluminum and most plastics are generally easier to machine. The cutting tools can move through them more quickly, reducing the overall production time. For an aluminum part of average complexity, we can usually produce it in less time compared to a steel part.

Steel, especially high – strength steel, is much harder. It wears down the cutting tools faster, and the machine has to operate at a slower speed to maintain accuracy. That means more time is needed for each cut, and tool changes are more frequent. A steel component of the same complexity as an aluminum one could take twice as long to produce.

The batch size also plays a huge role. If you’re only ordering a single part, the setup time is a significant portion of the total production time. We have to program the machine, set up the tools, and make sure everything is calibrated properly. This setup can take several hours. So, for a single part order, even if the actual machining time is short, the overall time from order to delivery could be a full day or more.

However, when you order in larger batches, the setup time gets spread out over all the parts. Let’s say we’re producing 100 parts. The setup might still take a few hours, but then each part’s machining time is added on. Overall, the time per part decreases significantly. For a medium – sized batch of, say, 50 – 100 parts of a moderately complex component, we might be looking at a total production time of 1 – 2 days once the setup is done. For really large batches of 500 or more, with proper planning and process optimization, we could produce them in 3 – 5 days.

Quality control is another aspect that affects the production time. We take quality very seriously, and every component has to meet our strict standards. After the machining is done, each part goes through a series of inspections. We use tools like calipers, micrometers, and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) to check the dimensions and ensure they’re within the specified tolerances.

For a simple part, the quality control process might only take a few minutes per part. But for complex parts, especially those with tight tolerances, it could take 10 – 15 minutes or more per part. This adds up, especially for large batches. So, you can see that quality control is a necessary step but can definitely impact the overall production time.

Production capacity is also something to consider. Our shop has a certain number of CNC turning machines, and they’re not always idle. If we’re in the middle of a high – volume production run for another customer, it might take a bit longer to get to your order. We try to manage our schedule as efficiently as possible, but sometimes there are backlogs.
